Governance Board
Dr. Sabelile Tenza
President
Dr Sabelile Tenza (PhD), a Senior Lecturer at the North-West University’s NuMIQ research entity, is a Public Health Specialist, with expertise in health systems and policy research. Dr Tenza is an internationally certified quality improvement, and patient safety specialist. Dr Tenza mentors quality leaders in the hospitals in the North-West Province. She leads hands-on training on quality and safety and advocates for safe care. In collaboration with hospital leaders in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District, she has established a virtual podcast on “Let’s talk about patient safety”, bringing together multi-disciplinary teams at all healthcare levels, local and abroad. Dr Tenza has served in several leadership roles, including chairing quality meetings, managing complaints in hospital boards and leading quality and safe healthcare initiatives locally and internationally. She is an award-winning international conference presenter and a sought-after speaker on matters of quality and safety. She has supervised PhD students to completion, won research grants and led large patient safety research projects to completion locally and internationally. Her community engagement roles include empowering the public on patient rights and amplifying their voices in patient safety matters. Dr Tenza is an editorial board member of the International Journal for Quality in Healthcare and is an ISQua member.
Dr. Maureen Tshabalala
Vice President
Dr Maureen Tshabalala is a public health practitioner with over 20 years of experience in global and public health, with an emphasis on Science of Improvement (SOI) and Health Systems Strengthening (HSS). She is currently an independent consultant, managing diverse projects and portfolios. Previously, she was a Senior Director for Global Delivery at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), where she worked for 13 years, led and managed IHI’s diverse improvement projects funded by various donors, and worked with myriad partners in sub-Saharan Africa and beyond. She is a trained improvement science specialist (improvement advisor) and has extensively led several improvement collaboratives in multiple countries. She was a content contributor and taught in-person IHIs and virtual professional development programmes globally. Her quality improvement (QI) career began at the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF), where she worked as a QI coordinator and later as a QI manager in five provinces in South Africa. Dr Tshabalala holds several qualifications, including a Master’s degree in Public Health from the University of South Africa and a PhD in Public Health from Walden University, USA
Dr. Petronella Lunda
Board Member
Dr Petronella Lunda is a senior lecturer at the North-West University, School of Nursing, with expertise in maternal and neonatal health. Her work is grounded in advancing respectful and high-quality maternity care, emphasising not only safe childbirth but also dignity, compassion and trust in every woman’s experience of care. She plays an active role in the clinical and research supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students, respectively, inspiring the next generation of healthcare professionals to champion a culture of empathy and excellence. Dr Lunda also serves as the Northwest provincial lead for the Society of Midwives of South Africa (SOMSA), where she advocates for respectful maternity care as a cornerstone of patient safety and quality. Her commitment to maternal and newborn health extends to international collaborations. She is a member of the USA-based Quality Maternal and Newborn Care (QMNC) Research Alliance Priority 1 Working Group, focusing on epistemic justice in maternity care, and the International Research Network for Compassionate Midwifery (IRNCM), a UK-based initiative advancing compassionate midwifery practice and research globally. Through her teaching, advocacy and research, Dr Lunda strives to ensure that maternal and newborn healthcare is both clinically sound and emotionally affirming, promoting safe, respectful and compassionate care.
Dr. Oluwadamilola Matti
Board Member
Oluwadamilola Matti (MBBS, MPH, PCQI, MWACP, FMCPH) is a consultant public health physician with over 18 years’ experience as a medical doctor. She obtained her MBBS from the University of Lagos and also obtained a Master’s degree in Public Health from the same university. She is a fellow of the National Postgraduate College of Nigeria, public health faculty and a member of the West Africa College of Physicians. Dr. Matti has worked in both public and private healthcare institutions over the course of her career. She is passionate about improving the quality of healthcare in Nigeria and has been serving in that space for the last 13 years. She is a quality practitioner with the chartered Quality Institute (CQI), UK from which she obtained a Certificate in Quality Management Practices and is also a Quality Improvement specialist. She is a member of the Association of Public Health Physicians of Nigeria (APHPN), a member of the International Society for Quality in Healthcare (ISQua) as well as a member of the Society for Quality Healthcare in Nigeria (SQHN). She is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Directors (CIoD), Nigeria. She Is currently the Executive Manager of SQHN where she also serves as a board member and executive secretary to the board.
Dr. Musa Sono
Board Member
Dr. Musa Eileen Sono is a Medical Specialist in Public Health Medicine (PHM). She holds an MBChB from the University of Limpopo (MEDUNSA Campus), a Master of Medicine (MMed) in Public Health Medicine from the University of Limpopo, and a Fellowship of the College of Public Health Medicine of South Africa (FCPHM, SA). She is jointly appointed by the Limpopo Department of Health (LDoH) under the Tertiary Health Services, Specialised and Health Care Support Branch as a Medical Specialist, and by the University of Limpopo (UL), where she serves as a Senior Lecturer in the School of Medicine. Dr. Sono provides technical and strategic leadership to a range of provincial programmes and committees, including Clinical Complaints Management, Patient Safety Incident (PSI) Management, Provincial Immunisation Safety Expert Committee, Provincial Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Committee, Provincial Outbreak Response Committee. She also serves nationally as a member of the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) through the Medical Education, Training, and Registration Committee (METRC), contributing to the coordination and oversight of medical internship training. Dr. Sono is deeply passionate about infectious disease prevention and control, quality improvement, patient safety, and health promotion, and is committed to leveraging these areas to strengthen the health system and improve healthcare delivery.
Dr. Kelibone Qondovu
Board Member
Dr. Kelibone S. Qondovu is a dedicated medical officer in the North-West province Department of Health, with a passion for delivering high-quality patient care. Born in Christiana, a small town in the Northwest province, her journey in medicine has taken her from the scenic landscapes of South Africa to the vibrant streets of Havana, Cuba, where she studied medicine. She obtained her undergraduate degree at the Facultad De Ciencias Médicas Julio Trigo, Havana, Cuba. She served the communities of North-West Province over the past years she has focused on family medicine, most importantly she prioritise patient safety in all her service ensuring that every individual receives compassionate and comprehensive care. With a strong foundation in medicine and a commitment to excellence, she strives to make a positive impact in her community.
Dr. Nosimilo Mlangeni
Board Member
Dr Mlangeni is a versatile Public Health Professional with over two decades of experience spanning program leadership, applied research, academia and technical advisory roles. She holds a PhD in Public Health, specializing in health system and policy. She currently works as a part-time co-lecturer at the University of Johannesburg, and a Public Health Consultant at Health Research Support. Dr Mlangeni has worked both as a research leader and a senior practitioner – overseeing HIV & TB care programs, leading provincial scale-up ART rollouts, and mentoring the next generation of health professionals. She has also served in academic institutions, where she has designed curricula, lectured in public health disciplines, and supervised postgraduates to completion. Dr Mlangeni is keenly devoted in health research, and to contributing to evidence-based policies that improve the health status of the population. The focus of her specialty is health systems and policy, and translation of research into policy and practice.
